Chair Yoga

Mary Cavanaugh, co-founder of YogaJP, is the creator of Chair Yoga - which really was an accident back in the 1970's. Mary was asked by Saddleback School District Night School to teach at a retirement home. Not knowing anything about retirees, she showed up ready to teach a regular class and found that everyone was using walkers, wheel chairs, cains etc. After the initial surprise of the class dynamics, she used her quick and enterprising mind by moving the folding chairs from the outer edges of the room into a big circle and low and behold, Chair Yoga was born! Chair Yoga is a great intro to Yoga

Chair Yoga is approved by the Arthritis Foundation to ease the aches and pains of arthritis sufferers, and is very beneficial for people with sedentary lifestyles. Chair Yoga DVD is a must to counteract the affects of computer work, gardening, crafts, painting and even piano playing. For many people just starting off with yoga, Yoga with a Chair is an easy and gratifying way to get started.

What benefits can you expect from Yoga with a Chair?

  • Increased circulation in the feet, legs, knees, hips, shoulders and elbows, which helps the general well-being of the heart.

  • The breathing techniques used in this approach are very effective for people with emphysema and asthma and aid in heart function.

Mobility Improvements with Chair Yoga

In the course of her career, Mary has helped people who have been wheelchair-bound to move around without their chairs. Others have been able to set aside their canes, and some who previously had little flexibility are able to get up and down from the floor.

Based on Mary's successful Cable-TV Yoga Program, YogaJP created "Gentle Yoga for Seniors" which includes Chair Yoga especially created for people just starting out with Yoga.
